Controlled Burn Procedures
Rolette County has controlled burn procedures. Landowners, equipment operators and outdoor enthusiasts are requested to take proper precautions during all open burning situations:
- Check with your local Fire Chief where you desire to conduct open burning.
- Contact the Rolette County Distpatch Center at 477-5623 before a controlled burn is started so that emergency responders are not dispatched for reports of a fire when it is a controlled burn. Be prepared to give your name, contact number, location of controlled burn, and anticipated duration of the burn. After the burning is completed and the fire is out, again contact the Rolette County Distpatch Center to inform them of the completion.
- A controlled burn needs to be physically monitored at all times. Once the fire is started, don't walk away until the fire is completely out.
- Be prepared if the fire gets out of hand. Call 911 immediately and have resources available to mitigate the effects (water, extinguisher, shovels, tractor).
NOTE: You do not have to call into dispatch to have a campfire, recreation fire, or burn barrel, but you can only participate in these when the fire danger rating is LOW or MODERATE.
By following this procedure ensures that voluntary fire departments are aware of the controlled burns in their area, and not unnecessarily called out unless there is a real emergency.

Check for restrictions before burning and participating in outdoor activities
It is critical that you verify current restrictions BEFORE burning or participating in outdoor activities as conditions may develop throughout the day, such as issuance of a Red Flag Warning, that results in a change in restriction status.
